Introduction
In 2006 the Federal Malaysian government decided to develop South Johor Economic Region as a major corridor for economic development in the country. In this context a vision, known as Iskandar Malaysia, has been facilitated through a Comprehensive Development Plan underpinning strategies to boost the physical and economic development of the Johor Bahru metropolitan area.


Objectives
- understand the political context behind IM
- understand IM objectives
- understand CPD strategies to facilitate IM vision
- Compare MSC KL with IM (Putrajaya and Cyberjaya Vs Nusajaya)
- understand social-economic-environmental sustainability of IM
- understand the urban outcomes of IM
- understand IM compatibility to Singapore (IM Vs Singapore or IM+Singapore or IM&Singapore)

Kampung Selatan (20th July/afternoon): "Modernization Vs. Diversity"

Introduction
....Situated at the estuary where Skudai River and Danga River meets the open sea at Straits of Johor, is Kampung Bakar Batu. There was once lush mangrove forest, rich with natural resources; fishes, crabs, prawns and etc were the natural resources which sustain the living of a unique ancient aborigine Austronesia proto-malay race called ORANG SELETAR....


Objectives
- understanding the condition of aborigenal kampung in JB
- understanding challenges minorities face with the fast modernization of JB
- understanding tourism and socio-spatial impacts in the local economy of a kampung

Introduction
SIJORI and later IMS-GT (Indonesia-Malaysia-Singapore Growth Triangle) is an economic model developed in the 90's to understand and to explain transnational economic cooperation between Singapore and its neighboring regions. It assumes that Singapore growth has spilled out from the city-state (because lack of space and affordable workforce) to Johor and Riau Islands. This "extra-growth" has generated dramatic economic-urban-social effects in JB and Riau.

Objectives
- understand the transnational dimension of IM
- estimate the territorial outcomes of daily transnational commuting between JB and Singapore
- learn Singapore current developments
- understand Singapore masterplan compatibility to IM
- understand the political context of Singapore-JB transnational urban region

- bus/train travel/fieldwork across Malaysia/Singapore border

Introduction
Cyberjaya and Putrajaya are the result of massive public investments to relocate and enhance administrative and high-tech actives in a wider KL metropolitan region. The two developments are at the core of MSC Malaysia which is a super-IT corridor which stretches from the Petronas Tower to KL International Airport.

Objectives
- understand the political context behind MSC Malaysia
- understand public sector commitment to implement MSC vision
- understand MSC urban outcomes
- learn about the implementation of Cyberjaya and Putrajaya

Activities
- workshop with Putrajaya City Planning Department
- visit/fieldwork activities in the two planned cities
- independent fieldwork in KL metropolitan region
